SAN FRANCISCO — MidPen Housing, along with the City of San Francisco, has broken ground on two affordable housing communities in San Francisco. Combined, the buildings will include 167 units for low-income families and employees of the San Francisco Unified School District and the San Francisco Community College District. Rent restrictions and a construction timeline were not disclosed.
In 2019, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order allowing state agencies to use excess properties for affordable housing development. In May 2021, the state of California selected MidPen to develop two affordable housing projects at 750 Golden Gate Ave. and 850 Turk St. The properties are being built on land that was formerly a parking lot.
750 Golden Gate and 850 Turk are funded by a mix of federal tax credits and support from the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, the California Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency. Additional lending and equity financing was provided by First Citizens Bank and Bank of America.
Cahill Contractors, David Baker Architects, Min Design, Form/Work, KPFF Consulting Engineers, Emerald City Engineers and Precision Construction Management Services are among the development partners.
750 Golden Gate and 850 Turk are MidPen Housing’s second and third affordable housing projects in San Francisco. The organization completed Shirley Chisholm Village in 2024.
